Material Gains

Recently , I've noticed that kids, especially young ones, are gaining access to more and more stuff. What stuff? Expensive and brand new stuff like Playstation Portable(PSP), Nitendo DS Lite, brand new expensive handphones, 3G phones and I've even saw one young boy whose age should be about 8 having a iphone as his personal handphone.

Wow... I only had a gameboy at the age of 12?

The question is whether it is necessary for young children to own and have such expensive stuff? I believe that giving them such expensive gifts will not only spoil them but also tune their mindset to one such that material gains will be of priority. Let's say a young child at owns a Samsung Omnia 8gb at the age of maybe 10, given as a gift by his parent, then will the child request for a car at the age of 18? Maybe the example is a bit exaggerating but definitely the child will grow up thinking that expensive stuff are necessary for their happiness and continue to pursue even more.

Well, its good to own such great game consoles and handphones , (some of which are even way better than mine), but having them at such a young age... I wonder if I should feel happy or worried for them.

We are thinking of getting our middle boy, Alex a Nintendo DS Lite for his seventh birthday. As with any gift, it is more about the gift than how much it costs. We think that he will be old enough to appreciate it and care for it properly. He did well with his game boy advance, which he got two years ago. We generally focus our gift giving around one or a few quality gifts, rather than lots and lots of gifts, regardless of cost. With 4 children total, cost does become a factor in what we can afford, but we wouldn't exclude an expensive gift if it fit into the budget, just because it was expensive.

i agree, the consumers age is getting lower, young children seem to dress better than i do now, which is slightly depressing. what happened to the obvious fashion disasters of youth, they wont have any of that fun with photos they are embarressed to show their new partners at a reasonable age.

missing out on so much of thei youth by gorwing up so quickly. ahame really.
